Established in 1790, in Delhi's historic Chandni Chowk, Ghantewala
Confectioners the oldest sweet shop in India is more than two centuries old. Here six generations have
purveyed delectable sweets and spicy savouries to some of the greatest names in Indian History and to
anyone else who loves wholesome sweetmeats and snacks. Perhaps, no other enterprise exists, run by the
same family, at the same premises and with the same amount of customer's goodwill for so long.
"Like Ajmeri Gate or the Qudsia Bagh, Ghantewala is part of Old Delhi's landscape. When film producer
B.R Chopra made his comedy Chandni Chowk, he was at pains to include a replica of the shop in his set.
Chandni Chowk without Ghantewala? Unthinkable."
Reader's Digest, April 1984
Only our packaging has changed with time. The real stuff remains as pure and soul satisfying as it was
in the good old days when the Mughal dastarkhan in Red Fort awaited the arrival of our sweets.
Counterfeit Ghantewala shops, flaunting gleaming bells, cropped up to cash in on the extraordinary popularity.
As Kanhaiyalal Mishra Prabhakar, the eminent Hindi author, told in an interview to Reader's Digest- "Many
imitators hung the bells, but no other Ghantewala could carve a niche in the public mind and heart". |
